Robert Glenn Jones

February 6, 1936 — June 6, 2025

Dallas

On Friday, June 6, 2025, Robert Glenn “Bob” Jones passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in Dallas, TX. Bob also began his life in Dallas, born to Robert D. Jones and Velda Hanby Jones on February 6, 1936.

He was raised in Mesquite, TX until the age of 15 when he moved with his family to Houston. After graduating from Lamar High School in 1954, he became a student at Texas A&M University and a proud member of the “Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band”, serving in the Corps of Cadets and the Marching Band.

Bob was a member of Texas A & M Class of 1958 and graduated with a B.S. in Math and Physics. He married Carol Joan Townley of Houston, TX on December 30, 1958. Together they started his time with the U.S. Army where he served a little over two years and was discharged from the Army Reserves as a Captain three years later.

After the service, they moved to Garland, TX where Bob began his career as an engineer at Collins Radio. He navigated through acquisitions by Rockwell International and Alcatel and ultimately retired after a dedicated 30-year career. Bob and Carol enjoyed 66 years of marriage and were the proud parents of three children: Robert Glenn, Cherilyn Lee and Wendell David.

In addition to caring for his family, Bob found the greatest joy in serving the community. He became an amateur radio operator at 15, originally licensed as W5TGA and later opting to change to W5BJ. He was a member of the Garland Amateur Radio Club since 1962 and participated in emergency communications (RACES and ARES), and Garland Civil Emergency Service’s SKYWARN program, providing key communication during active weather situations and running annual training events. He volunteered alongside other radio operators for over 30 years at the White Rock/Dallas marathon and enjoyed Field Day and many other amateur radio events. Bob also served on the Garland Planning and Zoning Commission and for seven years on the Sachse City Council.

In his younger years Bob enjoyed playing sports, then evolved to coaching Glenn and Cheril’s football and softball teams and eventually resigned himself to watching them on TV, staying true over the years to the Cowboys, Rangers and his beloved Aggies. In his later years he loved listening to music in the evenings, dinners with family or friends and time with his grandkids. He played the harmonica around the house, at nursing homes, FUMC Sachse (his church home for 40 years) and even accompanied a famous musician a time or two. He and Carol traveled around the country taking trips with his parents, kids and Carol’s mother, Opal.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Glenn Jones and his wife Karen, daughter Cheril Giles, and son Wendell Jones and his wife Kimberly, seven grandchildren (Amanda Jones Stearns, Shelly Rinebarger Kelley, Alex Jones, Megan Rinebarger, Aja Dyer, Caden and Logan Jones) and six great grandchildren.

Bob lived a long life and a good life. He will be missed.
