Ricky Paul Bailey, beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, coach, and friend, was born on June 3, 1957, in Rantoul, Illinois, to Evelyn and Paul Bailey. The oldest of three children, Rick grew up with a big heart and an even bigger personality. He is now reunited in heaven with his mother, Evelyn, and his daughter, Abigail.
Rick wore many hats throughout his life. He spent time as a car salesman and managed several bars and restaurants, always bringing laughter and his natural charm wherever he went. But his heart was always in teaching and coaching. When his daughter Abigail was born, he followed that calling back to the classroom and the field, where he truly belonged.
Coaching wasn’t just a job for Rick; it was who he was. He coached football, basketball, track, baseball, softball and volleyball, sharing his love for the game and his belief that every kid deserved a chance to shine. His players and students will remember his kindness, humor, and how he made everyone feel seen and supported.
His love for sports went far beyond the teams he coached, he was always cheering on his beloved (and sometimes frustrating) Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns.
Rick was the proud father of five children—Brent, Britaini, Rikki, Abigail and Peyton—and grandpa to eight wonderful grandchildren, all of whom he loved deeply. Peyton was his best friend, riding buddy, and baby boy. The two of them shared a special bond that could never be broken.
Rick had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend; he never met a stranger, even if he had, in fact, just met you five minutes ago. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and by the end of it, you’d be laughing and swapping stories like you had known each other forever. He loved hard, gave freely, and never hesitated to lend a hand when someone needed help. With his quick wit and huge personality, Rick could brighten any room, and as he liked to joke, he really could “sell ice to Eskimos.”
Rick is survived by his children, grandchildren, his father Paul, sister Louanne, along with her husband Stan and their children, and his brother David.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and compassion that will continue to live on through everyone he touched. Rick made a lasting impact on all who knew him, especially the many students, athletes, friends, and family who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
