Marvin Hoggatt

Marvin Luther Hoggatt, 95, known and loved by many as Pawpaw, peacefully passed into eternity on August 1st, 2026, in Rockwall, TX. Marvin was born on April 7th, 1931, to Ernest Hoggatt and Janie Smith in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

Marvin served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. During his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. On June 18, 1960, Marvin married the love of his life, Martha Ozealia Surrett. During their 66 years together, they built a beautiful life and family that grew to include their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Through every season of their marriage, his love and devotion to Martha remained at the heart of his life.

After the military, Marvin spent 25 dedicated years working for Texaco. During his retirement, he spent much of his time outdoors, one of his favorite places to be. He enjoyed cutting grass, tending to his garden, and soaking up the Texas sun on his porch.

Marvin was a man of unwavering faith who loved the Lord. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Lavon, where he formed many cherished friendships. He will be remembered for his bright smile, quick wit, and sassy spirit. While we mourn his loss, we are comforted to know that he is in God’s safe and loving arms.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Hoggatt and Janie Smith, and his daughter, Kimberly “Kim” Tompkins. His memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Martha; their son, James Hoggatt; his grandchildren, Sara, Kase, Jamie, Taylor, and Ryan; his great-grandchildren, James, Kymber, and Aaliyah; and the many family members and friends who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who knew and loved Marvin to share a handwritten letter in his memory.
