Lewis “Papa Wowo” Scott
Lewis Scott, 92, of Sachse, Texas, passed away surrounded by his loving family. He was known affectionately by nearly everyone—family, friends, and neighbors—as “Papa Wowo.” Lewis lived a joy-filled life marked by a deep faith in Jesus Christ, service to others, and love for his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter Rainey and her husband Evan; his grandchildren Eric, Hannah, Lydia, Luke, and Mark; and many extended family members, friends, and neighbors who knew and loved him deeply.
Born on July 16, 1932, in Grand Prairie, Texas, to John and Ella Scott, Lewis had one sister, Charlotte, and three brothers Bob, Bill and Eugene. Lewis learned the values of hard work and frugality growing up during the great depression. He was handy with tools and used his skills serving honorably in the United States Navy as a mechanic supporting aircraft operations during the Korean conflict.
After military service, he worked as a factory worker in the automotive industry. In 1955, he married his high school sweetheart Dolly Marie Shamblin who passed away in 2011 after 55 years of marriage. He worked as a circulation district manager for the Dallas Times Herald before working as a night bundle hauler for the Times Herald and the USA Today. Though the work was quiet and demanding, he carried it out faithfully—never seeking recognition, only showing up with steady hands and a willing heart.
For the last 25 years, Lewis made his home in Sachse, Texas, where he remained until his passing surrounded by his daughter and her family.
He was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and served in church wherever he lived. After moving to Mesquite from Grand Prairie he was a member of Northridge Baptist Church (now Galloway Avenue Baptist). When he retired to East Texas he joined First Baptist Church of Gladewater. He also kept a home in Harlingen in the Rio Grande Valley where he joined the Church of Christ at 8th and Harrison. He bought a cabin in the mountains of New Mexico at Camp Blue Haven and worshiped with the Church of Christ campers and cabin owners during the summers. When staying with his daughter Rainey in North Texas he attended Firewheel Bible Fellowship in Garland and then Waterbrook Bible Fellowship in Wylie. He was always involved and always faithful.
As important as service in church was, he also loved his small routines—strong black coffee in the morning, feeding birds in the yard, watering the lawn with a hose in hand, planting flowers and vegetables, and watching westerns or the History channel. He was known for mixing all his food together on his plate, sneaking in sweet treats, and keeping a glass of uncaffeinated diet sweet tea close by.
He loved to tease by declaring absurdities with utmost seriousness before laughing out loud. He filled every space with his voice—whether through stories, songs, or tender morning invitations like, “Come sit on my lap.”
He gave his wife Dolly the nickname “Mama Wowo,” and their bond was strong and steady. Tragically, Dolly fell victim to Alzheimer’s in the early 2000s and Lewis lovingly cared for her every moment until the day she died.
Lewis also found deep joy in nature and time with his family. He and his brother Bill restored with their own hands the family’s lake house in East Texas and a mountain cabin in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
He loved his daughter, Rainey, with a father’s unwavering devotion, and poured love into each of his grandchildren with gentleness, humor, and sincerity. He held a special tenderness for his two special needs grandchildren with kindness, playfulness, and complete acceptance.
Lewis is now enjoying eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and he leaves a strong legacy behind with the family he raised, the lives he touched, and the stories we’ll keep telling.
