Hollis Steven Hufstetler, Sr, 1977, of Lucas, Texas, passed away on November 2, 2026, following a lengthy battle with Lewy body dementia.
Steve was born on December 30, 1948, to Hollis S. and Annie Royce Garrett Hufstetler. Although the Lord called Royce home before Steve’s second birthday, He provided another loving mother in Joyce, who helped raise him. He grew up in a large family with one older brother and seven younger siblings.
Steve was proud to be a Gladiator of East Rome High School in Georgia. Steve represented East Rome and placed 2nd at State in wrestling. Additionally, he played football in high school and soccer in college. His love of history led him to earn a Bachelor of Arts in history from Temple University in 1973. He later earned a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1987, became a Certified Public Accountant in 1988, and later established his own business, Tax Recovery, Inc.
Steve’s Christian faith was central to his life and even led him to attend seminary. Steve was an avid reader and student of Scripture, memorizing Psalm 119 and the book of James. He especially enjoyed teaching God’s Word to his children and many Sunday school classes over the years. His faith also took him on mission trips around the world.
Steve shared 55 years of marriage with his wife, Katherine Ann “Kathy” Thompson Hufstetler. Together, they raised four children and built a life filled with family and adventure. The family lived in Alaska for four years, where Steve worked in logging, enjoyed recreational fishing, and later returned for a season of commercial fishing.
Throughout his life, Steve enjoyed playing and coaching soccer, riding horses, and farm life with the family’s horses, cows, dogs, cats, and even, at one time, a hedgehog. Most of all, he treasured time with his family. Visits from his grandchildren often included a lively round of his favorite board game, Sorry!
Steve was a member of the Rotary Club, City Council-Petersburg, Alaska; City Council-St. Paul, TX.; and was Mayor of St. Paul, TX.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Hollis S. Hufstetler, and his mother, Annie Royce Garrett Hufstetler.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kathy; his four children, Cherith (Travis) Mayer, Heidi (Ryan) Merchant, H. Steven (Julie) Hufstetler, Jr., and Tyler (Erin) Hufstetler.
He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren: Abigail and Peyton Mayer; Tyler (Congetta) Merchant, Carley, Katelynn, and Chelsey Merchant; Owen and Eleanor Hufstetler; and Ella, Benjamin, Luke, and Grace Hufstetler.
Additional survivors include his mother, Joyce Evans Hufstetler; his eight siblings, Greg (Jeanie) Hufstetler, Holly (Joseph) Denton, Chuck (Joan) Hufstetler, Mark (Martha) Hufstetler, Jill (Terry) Downs, Cherry (Peter) Ertsos, Ted Hufstetler, and Tim (Lori) Hufstetler; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Reformation Church, 402 W. Bethany Drive, Allen, Texas.
