Doris Joan (Joanie) Freeman, of Garland, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Joanie was born January 18, 1932, in Oilton, Oklahoma, to Birdie Mae Peden McKee and John Wesley McKee. Joanie graduated from Pauls Valley High School, and soon thereafter married the love of her life, Bert Freeman, on August 6, 1949 in Gainesville, Texas. Joanie and Bert were married for 69 years at the time of Bert’s passing in 2019. Together they raised two wonderful children, Steve and Lea Ann. While Joanie worked outside the home for many years, she always took great care of her family, keeping a nice home, and preparing home cooked meals. Joanie spent most of her early life in Oklahoma, until she and Bert moved to Garland, Texas, in 1991. They enjoyed traveling, and later purchased an RV to be able to travel for extended periods. Joanie loved Tai Chi, and was very good at it. She was even known to teach a class or two. She also enjoyed genealogy, shopping adventures with Lea Ann, and watching a good football or baseball game (the Sooners, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Rangers were her teams.) And she loved spending time with her family, and her cat, Pretty Girl.
Joanie is survived by her son, Steve and wife, Wrenda of Corsicana, and daughter, Lea Ann and husband, David Cannon of Plano. Joanie was also lovingly known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, Blake Cannon of Little Rock, AR, Cameron Cannon and wife, Liz of Denver, CO, Alec Cannon of Tulsa, OK, David McCathern and wife Kayla of Yukon, OK, Hunter Freeman of Austin, and Abbey Freeman of Conroe; to five great grandchildren, AJ, Claire, Katelynn (KK), Hazel, and Violet; two nieces, Carla Jenkins of Austin and Cathy Brown of Kingsland; and by her beloved cat, Pretty Girl.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bert Freeman, her parents, and her brother Carl McKee. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Joanie’s devoted and loving caregivers, Susan Dodd, and Susie Ramer, who took such wonderful care of Joanie for the last many years, as well as to Latakka and Abeba, and staff at Oxford Glen Memory Care Center of Sachse.
A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 8th at Plano Mutual Cemetery.
The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy, consider making a donation to the charity of their choice.
