Barbara Elaine Broughton, 88, of Garland, Texas, entered Heaven peacefully on July 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was a beloved wife, devoted mother of three, and cherished grandmother of five.
Born on December 12, 1936, in Como, Texas, Barbara spent most of her youth in Garland, where she graduated from Garland High School, Class of 1955 and met the love of her life, Philip J. Broughton. They were married on December 30, 1955, at First Baptist Church of Garland. Not long after, they moved to Augusta, Georgia, where Phillip was stationed after being drafted into military service.
Barbara became a mother with the birth of their first son, Philip Gerald Broughton, on December 6, 1957. The young family returned to Garland in 1958, where their second son, David Kyle Broughton, was born on May 30, 1960. Nine years later, their daughter, Cynthia Marie Broughton, completed the family, born on August 22, 1969.
Barbara gave her life to Christ at an early age and was a devoted follower of Jesus throughout her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church Garland in her early years, later joining Second Baptist Church in the 1960s. In 1979, she returned to First Baptist, where she became a faithful and cherished member of the Barnabas Sunday School Class.
She lovingly stayed home to raise her children during their school years, then entered the workforce full-time in 1988. Barbara served as an Office Administrator, first with a real estate appraisal firm and later with Union Carbide in Garland, where she worked until her retirement. In retirement, she continued to serve the Lord through the Friendship House, First Baptist Garland’s benevolence ministry. For nearly 20 years—until the age of 85—she gave of her time and heart to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of others in the community.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, V.T. Wren (1915–1940) and Agnes Marie Martin (1918–1993); her brother, Richard Carroll Wren (1939–2010); and her son, Philip Gerald Broughton (1957–2013).
She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Philip James Broughton; her children, David Kyle Broughton and wife Marialou, and Cynthia Marie Dunnican and husband Cory; her grandchildren, Dallas William Broughton, Philip Kyle Broughton, Laura Elaine Dunnican, William Pierce Broughton, and William Michael Dunnican; her nieces, cousins, and a host of dear friends who were blessed by her kindness and faith.
Barbara’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, joyful service, and steadfast love. Her warm smile, wise words, and servant’s heart will live on in the countless lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friendship House at First Baptist Church of Garland or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in Barbara’s memory.
